A united front from the two tech giants: Google and Apple are taking steps to make switching between Android and iOS smoother than ever before.

Android and iOS have long been two sides of the same coin. They share the basics—calls, messages, photo storage, and the everyday apps you rely on—but they’ve traditionally struggled to talk to each other. Now, after years of rough edges, Google and Apple are piloting a system designed to enable better cross-platform communication during setup and to simplify the process of switching between devices.
The development shows up in the latest Android Canary 2512 build for Pixel devices. A new “Copy data” option enables wireless data transfer between Android and iOS. Rather than juggling separate tools like Move to iOS or Switch to Android, the system creates a linked session using a unique ID and a passcode. Once connected, it can transfer photos, messages, and files in one streamlined flow.
Keep in mind that Canary releases are experimental and not intended for everyday use. Apple’s side of the integration isn’t active yet. Support is expected to arrive in a future iOS 26 developer beta.
But before we declare a new era of tech harmony, it’s worth noting the motive behind this collaboration. Regulatory pressure is driving the move toward better interoperability, with particular emphasis from the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. The DMA pushes for more transparent data portability and easier platform migration.
Apple has publicly stated it intends to offer a “user-friendly solution” for transferring data from iPhone to non-Apple devices by fall 2025 as part of its compliance efforts.
Google already provides the Switch to Android app (launched in 2022) to help users shift from iOS to Android. Apple has not offered a comparable native tool, and the DMA requirements are nudging both companies toward a more balanced approach. The prospect is that crossing ecosystems may become a less tedious experience.
The new transfer system is still in early testing, so broad access will take time. Still, it marks a milestone: the two largest mobile platforms are speaking a common language, even if only in a limited way. When it’s widely available, moving between Android and iOS could feel less like coaxing two rivals to cooperate and more like connecting two devices that were always meant to work together.
