New evidence of a gum-like substance in Bennu samples

A 2025 Nature Astronomy paper also reported the discovery of a novel “gum-like” material in the Bennu samples, a finding never before observed in space rocks. NASA describes this gum as a compound enriched with nitrogen and oxygen, consisting of complex molecules that could have provided the chemical precursors necessary for life on Earth. Discovering such material on Bennu offers researchers a fresh avenue to study how life’s building blocks emerged and whether similar processes could occur elsewhere.

Experts suggest that these materials might have contributed to the early stages of life on Earth and could indicate that the ingredients for life are more common in the solar system than previously thought. Daniel Glavin, a NASA scientist and OSIRIS-REx Co-Investigator, remarked that the findings increase optimism about the potential to detect life beyond Earth—even within our own solar system.
