The battle against yaws, a neglected tropical disease, is hindered by a critical shortage of test kits in the Upper East Region of Ghana. This issue is vividly illustrated through the story of Cyril, an 11-year-old boy whose painful sores went untreated for months due to the lack of diagnostic tools. Despite the healthcare team's suspicion of yaws, they were unable to confirm the diagnosis, leading to a prolonged and exhausting journey for Cyril's mother, Anaamah, as she sought relief for her son. This scenario is not an isolated incident; it reflects a widespread challenge across the region. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends early and accurate diagnosis through Rapid Diagnostic Tests to effectively manage yaws. However, without these test kits, health workers are left to diagnose based on clinical signs and symptoms, often leading to underreporting and misdiagnosis. The region's 15 municipal and district health centers are grappling with suspected yaws cases, but the absence of test kits forces them to rely on visual diagnosis, which is prone to errors. The stigma surrounding yaws in rural communities, such as Zonno, Aneeribisi, and Kantia, further exacerbates the problem, causing families to attribute the disease to witchcraft and delaying proper treatment. The Upper East Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Services reported 1,190 suspected yaws cases between 2020 and 2024, alongside other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). The lack of funding and investment in diagnostics, surveillance, and community sensitization is a significant barrier to the fight against yaws. The Upper East Regional Vice-Chairman of the Coalition of NGOs in Health, Mr. Thomas Adua, emphasizes the need for strategic investment in rapid diagnostic test kits and essential medicines to eliminate yaws as a public health problem. Additionally, investing in water and hygiene facilities in schools and communities is crucial to reducing the spread of the disease. The battle against yaws is far from over, but it is being slowed by the absence of essential tools and resources, highlighting the urgent need for action to address this neglected health issue.
